Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience.
This June 2026 issue is dedicated to the ‘public realm’—the communal urban spaces that are increasingly at risk of decline, whether through real estate greed or the escalating encroachment of the digital sphere. Case studies span a multi-storey Municipal Services Building in Hong Kong—home to a bustling food market, library and sports centre—currently under threat of demolition; Accra’s ‘Black Star Square’, a positive example of recent public space development; and, Ljubljana’s cleverly redesigned riverbanks. The theme also relates to the magazine’s annual Public Awards, the winner of which is a Warsaw park created from a vast Second World War-era pile of rubble.
Plus, you’ll also find an accompanying supplement from the Danish Brick manufacturer Petersen Tegl, the focus of which is ‘Brickwork and Responsible Architecture’.
