The New Yorker, Cover to Cover

245 x 310mm, 338 pages (hardback)
Written, edited, and designed by Francoise Mouly, art editor, The New Yorker
Introduction by David Remnick, editor-in-chief, The New Yorker

Every week since 1925, The New Yorker has published another issue with a new, commissioned illustration on its front cover. This new book collects together many of these unique artworks, organising them into seven thematic chapters, each with detailed captions providing insight into the creative process of briefing artists and developing their ideas—this is more than just another picture book. Francois Mouly is the woman charged with commissioning the cover art, and her notes are detailed and transparent.

The collection presents hundreds of drawings, paintings, collages, cartoons and digital work from the likes of Saul Steinberg, Barry Blitt, Maria Kalman, Chris Ware, Adrian Tomine, Christoph Niemann and Malik Favre (who’s 2016 cover is repurposed as the cover of the book). 30 of the most regular artists are treated to a spotlight section, highlighting their contributions to the magazine.

It’s a fabulous book, of interest to people who want to just look at the covers, as well as those who want to learn about the creative process behind their creation.
