'A Bloomsbury set for the podcast age'

The Observer claimed recently to have spotted a new trend in publishing, linking together several independent literary magazines to create a movement – 'A Bloomsbury set for the podcast age'. Slightly old news but good to see independent titles getting acknowledged by the mainstream. McSweeney's, The Believer and the late Zembla all feature in the Observer piece along with newer projects To Hell, Cabinet and n+1.

Despite their creative ambitions, these are not always the best-looking magazines, McSweeney's being an obvious exception. Sister title, the lesser-known The Believer, runs beautiful covers combining type and illustration with unique use of colour, as the examples above show.
