Francesco Franchi, La Repubblica
Today’s ModMag17 preview features Francesco Franchi. One of the most highly-regarded editorial designers working today, Francesco combines strong visual creativity with intellectual theories of news storytelling. He made his name in Milan with the monthly newspaper supplement IL, before moving to Rome and La Repubblica, where he has launched the new weekly section Robinson.
What’s your favourite cover of your magazine?
The 24th issue of Robinson, from May of this year. And the reason is quite obvious :) (Francesco is a keen cyclist)
What has been your magazine highlight of 2017?
The New York Times for Kids. Because I like the idea and the experiment to test a newspaper format for a young readership.I like the attention to details and the richness of irony and ideas.
What was the one mistake that taught you the most about making magazines?
To lose the journalistic sense
Which other speaker are you most looking forward to hearing at ModMag?
Takahiro Kinoshita, editor of Popeye.
What will you be talking about at ModMag?
I'll focus on my new work at la Repubblica, in particular Robinson, and on the change from the small magazine format of IL to the large newspaper format.
