magCulture Meets Tortoise

Our next magCulture Meets is a unique opportunity to hear from one of the key figures behind the soon-to-launch news project Tortoise.

As its name suggests, Tortoise promises a slower, wiser approach to news. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the website is currently open to founding supporters, who will also soon receive the first quarterly print magazine. That launch issue lists the names of those supporters on its cover – the white detail in the image below – who together raised over £500,000.

For this special edition of magCulture Meets, creative director Jon Hill will share his work to date on Tortoise, as its public launch approaches.

Jon started his editorial design career working with Simon Esterson on magazine and newspaper redesigns. He later collaborated with Neville Brody on a redesign of The Times newspaper before becoming its Design editor, launching the first UK newspaper edition app on iPad and the first ‘paywalled’ newspaper website. In 2014 he moved to the Telegraph to become their Creative Director, redesigning all of their products across print, digital and brand. Jon was appointed Creative Director and Partner of Tortoise at the end of 2018, where he works today, slowly.

Founders of Tortoise include James Harding, previously Editor of The Times and Director of BBC News, and Katie Vanneck-Smith, ex-President of The Wall Street Journal & Dow Jones.

The evening will see an illustrated talk followed by an audience Q&A.

Thursday 21 March
Doors opens at 6.30pm and the talk will kick off at 7pm

We’re grateful to Park Communications and the Five Points Brewing Company for their support of magCulture Meets.

magCulture Meets is a monthly series of talks intended to give insight into the process of magazine making. The evenings offer the opportunity to share a beer with fellow magCulturalists and hear a magazine-maker discuss their project in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

We are unable to provide refunds or transfer tickets.
