Founded by two former fact-checkers at The New Yorker, new title Now Voyager (even the name sounds similar) sets out to usher in an era of reporting devoted to international stories that cross borders and—where relevant—expose the connections between them. The publication promises rigorous journalism, research, and fact-checking, without sacrificing creative liberties, spanning long-form writing, photography, art, food, and humour. Touted as ‘ambitious’ by The New York Times when it debuted—beneath a headline that reads ‘A New Magazine of International Reportage? In This Media Environment?’—Now Voyager sets sail at a time of shifting media landscapes.
This rust coloured fourth edition showcases American photographer Baldwin Lee’s imposing shot of New York’s Twin Towers, taken between 1975 and 1979, as the focal point of its now staple bisected cover design. Reproduced in full-bleed inside, the photograph marks 25 years since the harrowing terrorist attacks we remember as 9/11.
Opening the issue, readers will find a 14-page spread dedicated to ‘World Matters’, featuring a series of briefings from across the globe. Elsewhere, in ‘Fear and Doping in Las Vegas’ Daniel Waite Penny reports from The Enhanced Games, an event where athletes compete aided by performance–enhancing drugs, in a sinister display intended to advertise to bystanders; Catherine McCormack shares the series ‘Quince años de Danna’ from photographer Alice Mann, following the fifteenth birthday celebrations of Ecuadorian teenager Danna—a spectacle of pink ball gowns, glitter and sparkly heels—capturing ‘girlhood’s evergreen longings for a particular fantasy of femininity’; and Charles Shafaieh sits in conversation with novelist and playwright Ariel Dorfman and journalist Tariq Ali respectively, engaging in an extended discussion on censorship and their practices.
