Created by a couple of self-identified ‘makers’, the Glasgow-born publication We Are Makers exists to connect the reader and the maker, providing an opportunity for in-depth stories to be shared, craft to be (deservedly) shown off and creative communities cultivated.
This issue, as always, mixes the local and global, with visits to the magical Orkney Islands and the Beskid mountains in Poland and Maine in the USA. Inside, meet six creative makers in Orkney who work with materials offered by and in response to the islands. This includes Alison Moore's environmental jewellery made with seaweed and motifs inspired by her draw to the North Scottish sea. In Maine, ceramicist Brooke Knippa is showcased for her organic transition from hospitality work to pottery, and the whimsical woodland-inspired crockery that emerged from it.
Plus, the We Are Makers team heads to Latvia to explore a side of craftsmanship unknown to them, discovering the beauty of flax weaving, a traditional process in the country, alongside the reintroduction and appreciation of glass-blowing in Līvāni.
