California Sunday Magazine

The new issue of California Sunday Magazine leads with a photo report about female big-wave surfers, a strong series of images from Rose Marie Cromwell. They’re accompanied by a series of captions which have been gently manipulated to appear as waves of words.

It’s a nice effect, a typically subtle piece of typographic design from the creative tram led by creative director Leo Jung. An effect simple to achieve on your screen, right? Using today’s sophisticated technology it should be easy.

In fact, technology of another kind was used; Jung designed and printed the the texts as flat art, then curled them in real life, using his iPhone to shoot the resulting 3D type effects, as these working shots show.

I can’t help feeling these designs are far more natural and realistic than a carefully plotted 3D render.
