The Gentlewoman #20

Congratulations to everyone at The Gentlewoman for reaching the tenth anniversary of the magazine, and celebrating with a typically strong 20th edition.

Leading with author Margaret Atwood shot by Alisdair McLellan, inside we also meet artist Kara Walker, TV presenter Claudia Winkelman and a group of teenage female musicians from Scotland.

There’s also an invaluable ode to idleness, plenty of fashion, and lots of numbers, not least in the celebratory Index section. This notes every woman featured in the magazine so far alongside vital statistics concerning its history to date. My favourite fact is the change in spine depth as the maagzine has developed – it started at 7mm and is now 17mm deep (top).

Perhaps even more satisfying is this detail about the production of the magazine (above); is there another magazine so enthralled with the production process they would note a shift in paper stock?

Happy tenth birthday!
