‘Human behaviour through art’

Behaving explores human behaviour and creativity through stories spanning art, fashion, and photography.

This is ‘The Play Issue’, delving into our propensity for lighthearted fun. As the editorial of this edition asserts: ‘From childhood curiosity to adult absurdity, from performance to pleasure, this issue celebrates the moments when we let logic leave the room.’ Choose between four covers: a reproduced screen print of a five pound note by British sociopolitical artist Corbin Shaw, a young Katherine Hamnett shot by former The Face and i-D photographer Elaine Constantine, a whimsical in-motion portrait of musician Ms* Gloom, and a monochrome shot of model Céline captured by Rory DCS for this edition’s ‘Paper Dolls’ fashion editorial. Inside, discover conversations delving into the three cover artist’s incorporation of play in their practice, alongside further images from the ‘Paper Dolls’ series, which features a portfolio of nudes overlaid with clothing drawn by creative director Leylu Rolland.

Elsewhere, artist Helena Minginowicz discusses her use of fragile canvases such as paper towel, plastic film and ‘disposable’ ephemera; Noor Massoud analyses artist Cristine Brache’s deceptive Playboy bunny paintings, which on first glance may be mistaken for Polaroids, and the poignancy of discovering her work through Instagram—‘a space where femininity gets rehearsed and repeated’; and hair takes centre stage in an editorial shot by Kiki Zou, featuring luscious locks artfully tamed by Hayate Maeda.
