It’s with great pleasure that we can announce the first New York edition of our ModMag conference!
ModMag NY Edition will take place on Wednesday 30 May 2018 at Parsons School of Design, New York.
We are currently programming a series of talks from some of the most innovative and exciting figures in contemporary magazine publishing, from founders of emerging independent publications to senior figures at established magazines. All will provide their own unique insight into today’s magazines and the challenges they face. As ever, the day will be an international affair with speakers from across the globe flying in to join local speakers.

Kirsten Algera, co-creative director, MacGuffin (The Netherlands)
After just five issues, MacGuffin has established itself as one of the most exciting magazines being made today. Kirsten will discuss each issue’s use of a single item – the bed, the window, the cabinet, etc – as the starting point for a journey through design history, anthropology, art and multiple other disciplines.
Gail Bichler, design director, The New York Times Magazine (US)
Gail will discuss her team’s varied approaches to designing for the diverse range of content that the weekly publishes. She’ll give a behind the scenes look at how their conceptual covers are made and will discuss the role of experimentation in everything from their special issues, to their digital presence and some of their recent forays into other mediums like virtual reality and print-only sections of the paper.
Perrin Drumm, founder, AIGA Eye on Design website and magazine (US)
Since its 2014 launch, the Eye on Design website has established a unique online voice covering contemporary graphic design. Perrin will share the editorial process behind the project, and explain what the recently launched Eye on Design print magazine adds to their online conent.
Emily Oberman, designer, No Man’s Land (US)
Emily will be discussing her work on new magazine No Man’s Land, and reflecting on how what was conceived as an extension of The Wing brand has become something much broader as the context into which it is published has changed: the general political landscape, the current cultural climate and what it means to be a woman right now. She will discuss why we need a magazine that expresses all of this and how that is reflected in the design.
Michele Outland, creative director, Gather Journal & Bon Appetit (US)
Since its 2012 launch, Michele has established Gather Journal as a leading indie food title. She’ll be describing the success of that project and how it has led to her recent appointment to lead the creative team at Condé Nast title Bon Appetit. What are the similarities and differences between the two working environments?
Liv Siddall, ex-editor, Rough Trade magazine (UK)
As well as hosting ModMag NY Edition, Liv will be sharing her experience of building a magazine for Rough Trade and seeing it cease publication.
Alexander Tochilovsky, curator, The Lubalin Center (US)
Herb Lubalin partnered with publisher Ralph Ginsburg three times. The resulting magazines — Eros, fact and Avant Garde — remain classics of 1960s editorial design, yet each one failed for reasons outside the control of the creative team. Alexander will tell the story of these three stunning but flawed projects.
Omar Sosa, creative director, Apartamento (Spain)
Omar is one third of the creative trio behind ‘Everyday life interiors magazine’ Apartamento, which has just marked its tenth anniversary. He’ll be explaining how what started as a side project grew to become a leading light of the indie scene, and share key editorial influences on his magazine.
Justinien Tribillon & Isabel Seiffert, Migrant Journal (UK/Switzerland)
Migrant Journal was launched in 2016 with the mission to rewrite the prevailing narrative around global immigration and migration. Justinien and Isabel will explain why they chose a print magazine as the vehicle for their message, and what they hope to achive with their planned series of six issues.
Richard Turley, creative director, Mushpit and Civilization (US)
Between 2010 and 2014 Richard established a uniquely influential editorial voice at Bloomberg Businessweek. He left to work in TV and branding, but has recently designed several independent magazines (Good Trouble and Mushpit) and has just launched his own newspaper, Civilization. He’ll be talking to magCulture’s Jeremy Leslie about his return to publishing.
The day will also feature a series of talks bringing together leading voices of the US indie scene, highlighting the local strength of this area of magazine-making.

In the run-up to ModMag NY Edition, we’re collaborating with our friends at Vitsoe for MagMagMag. We’ll be setting up shop at 33 Bond Street, presenting over 60 highlights for sale from the magCulture Shop’s inventory of over 450 titles, providing an international mix of magazines covering design, sex, gardening and more.
Alongside an exciting selection of magazines that reflect the vibrant state of print publishing today, the collaboration will replicate London’s magCulture shop as a meeting place for magazine makers and magazine lovers. A schedule of talks, podcast recordings and informal gatherings will bring the printed pages to life and encourage a deeper understanding of the desire to publish in print in 2018.
